Abstract: This memorandum describes a common misperception concerning MANETs and their underlying network architecture when integrating into classic IP networks. It details the consequences of this misperception – breaking compatibility with existing appli- cations and protocols – and offers an architectural model for MANETs, which integrates MANETs into the IP networking architecture and encapsulates the MANET specific behav- ior in a way transparent to existing applications and protocols. Finally, this memorandum shows how the presented MANET architectural model fits with MANET deployment sce- narios, including ”simple MANETs” and management of nested NEMO networks.
