Animated Texels

Eurographics Workshop Computer Animation and Simulation (1995)

Abstract: Volumetric textures, introduced by Kajiya in 1989, are used to model complex geometries (such as foliage, fur, ...) on a textural way, by mapping a 'thick skin' made of a repetitive pattern (the texel) covering a simple surface. This article deal with animating volumetric textures. Complex geometry animation is equivalent to the one of the frame of the texel: - on an animated surface (cloth), the texels stay 'normals' to the surface, following its deformations. - on a rigid surface, texels are deformed by using a strength field (wind) ob the vertical edges. - it may be also possible to switch some 'key volumes' along the time, for a cartoon spirit animation (e.g. for small oscillations).
