Topological Repair on Voxel-Based Quadrangular Meshes

Abstract

In some neuroscience applications it is critical that the representation of anatomical structures is topologically faithful. This is especially important when the topology is known to be equivalent to a sphere. We propose a new approach to repair a voxel-based quadrangular mesh so that it becomes topologically equivalent to a sphere. The approach is graph-based and results in practice in an amount of change that is generally minimal. The algorithm was successfully applied to a database of 977 hand-segmented hippocampi from a study of ageing; spherical topology was achieved for all data sets.
