L'humanitarisation du sacrifice musulman. ONG confessionnelles et recompositions rituelles

Abstract : Based on fieldwork studies conducted on several faith-based NGOs (France, Turkey), this paper analyses the humanitarian practice of Muslim sacrifice. It emphasizes the reasons and stakes behind this “humanitarization” of a ritual endowed with a complex status in contemporary societies. By turning the sacrifice into an act of solidarity and aid towards the most needy, but also into a lever for development within beneficiary countries, this humanitarian practice restores the meaning of a ritual otherwise confronted with multiple constraints and transformations. The humanitarian management of the sacrifice denotes the ritual’s conversion to a technical and logistical process, hence questioning the mutation of ritual norms and practices due to global dynamics.
