Poster: Damaris - Using Dedicated I/O Cores for Scalable Post-petascale HPC Simulations

Résumé

As the number of processes used by large-scale HPC simulations grows, the generated number of files and data volumes become a major problem, causing application performance to be restrained by the underlying I/O system. We address this problem through a new approach for multi-core SMP machines: it uses dedicated I/O cores in each multi-core node to better schedule data transfers and processing. Our approach is evaluated with the CM1 atmospheric simulation and shows its efficiency in hiding the I/O overhead while reducing the number of output files and allowing computation and I/O to overlap.
