Abstract : "Le multimédia et la compression" offers an introductory course in the theories and techniques of compression at the origin of current and future multimedia. This book presents first function transforms. These transforms lead to consider a function not only in the temporal or spatial domain but also in the frequency domain. The digitization and compression of signals are then explained. Both compression process, i.e. quantization and coding, refer to the information theory of Claude Shannon that is also described. Finally, this paper discusses the compression models chosen for audio and video signals. These models allow loss of information when the human perception is less sensitive while maintaining a relatively high accuracy when the human perception ask for it.
