Abstract : We investigate a model diffraction problem of electromagnetic waves in a biological cell. The cell is modelled as a medium surrounded by a thin membrane, embedded in an ambient medium. We study a transmission problem with a thin layer in electromagnetism. We derive approximate transmission conditions in order to replace the thin layer by these conditions on the boundary of the interior domain. Our approach is essentially geometric and based on a suitable change of variables in the thin layer. Numerical simulations validate the theoretical results.
