Abstract : The present work describes the introduction of a large-eddy approach (LES) into an existing code developed for the simulation of aeroelastic problems. The code permits the simulation of compressible flows and employs unstructured grids for the treatment of complex geometry, typical of industria- l applications. A RANS approach with a $k-...$ model was previously used in the code for the simulation of turbulent flows. The subgrid scale model, proposed by Smagorinsky for the closure of the equations in the LES approach, is presented here in the formulation for compressible flows and for unstructur- ed grids. The main issue is to investigate the capabilities of LES combined with a diffusive numerical upwind technology, and the use of a wall-law within this approach. The simulation of the flow around a square cylinder and the analysis of the result sensitivity to different simulation parameters have been used for a first evaluation of the LES model implemented in the code.
