Résumé

This paper aims at showing how the generalisation of the access to the Internet in a medium-size university (about 22,000 students, a faculty of 800 and some 300 technical and administrative staff) has influenced the everyday life of students, teachers and technical staffs. It will focus on the main aspects related to the introduction of new technologies into the everyday life of teachers and students. It draws a panorama of the main attempts to design a new architecture for services. The service in charge of computers and associate services within Nancy2 is called CRI (Centre de Ressources Informatiques). It reassembles all the technical staff involved in computer science within the university. It assumes all the aspects related to computers in the field of research, pedagogy, documentation, administration and network. It realises the technical assistance of all the users, it manages the computers room and all the servers, the network infrastructure and all the related services as web, forums, ftp, email, ...; it defines the network security policy, develops specific software for the university, ..... In 1998, the university has decided to give automatically to each student an individual email address and a personal login. This login allows to use the standard environment defined for all students within the same group (a group is the community of people following the same pedagogical formation). This project has been called "Internet for all". At that time, almost all the administrative people and the teacher have received a professional email (it is on a voluntary basis, people has only to ask the CRI to obtain an electronic address). After two years of experimentation, it seams interesting to outline the main results of the project and to deduce from this report the desirable evolution in the years to come.
