Cosine Effect in Ocean Models

Abstract : We study the impact of the cosine terms of the Coriolis force, that are usually neglected in geophysical fluid dynamics, leading to the so-called traditional approximation. Mathematical well-posedness argu- ments for simplified models, as well as numerical simulations, are presented in order to suggest the use of these terms in large scale ocean modelling.
