Abstract

The aim of this one-day tutorial is to present the DataBase Management Systems (DBMS) evolution, starting from the relational concepts and technology. The tutorial fist, reviews the achitecture and the achievements of centralized as well as distributed relational DBMSs in order to exhibit the benefits and the limits of the relational technology. Post-relational and extensions to the relational technology are then reviewed: active, deductive, semantic and object-oriented databases. The tutorial ends with an overview of the situation of the database technology in modern applications (client/server and Web architecture).
