Abstract : Recent trends of cloud computing for managing, storing, and processing data have made possible blending information from heterogeneous sources that is available at anytime and everywhere. However, recent large-scale information leakage of users' data have raised concerns in guaranteeing their privacy. Many users are not fully aware of the privacy risk in sharing their data, what information others can infer from the different data items, how data is handled by cloud providers and web applications, and how persistent sensitive data is.In this paper we discuss the need to design new personal clouds with privacy guaranteed by design and we stress the importance of locality in scope and availability to guarantee privacy. We argue that users must always have control over their data without the need to delegate the management of their sensitive information to public cloud providers. We define the models that drive the design of a new system. Then we present our system along with the technical challenges and directions to reconcile security, usability, and privacy with the existing infrastructures.
