Securing e-passports with elliptic curves

Abstract : Password Authenticated Key Exchange (PAKE) protocols ensure that an adversary eavesdropping on communication between two parties can't learn any information on a low-entropy secret such as a four-digit PIN. For implementing PAKE protocols, elliptic-curve cryptography is fast and requires little memory. However, this technique raises the problem of representing numeric values as points on an elliptic curve. Researchers have solved this problem, and some PAKE protocols use this technique to achieve different security properties. A particular application area has been e-passports.
