Analyse des difficultés langagières, culturelles et méthodologiques des étudiants sinophones dans les universités en France

Abstract : The number of international university students keeps rising. As a result, Chinese-speaking students come to France in increasing numbers to carry on with their studies. How do they answer when asked about the difficulties faced during their studies? The first answer often involves problems concerning language but they are not the only ones. Students will also have to deal with the adaptation to a new culture and to new university methods.In this workshop we are going to present three case studies analyzing the difficulties faced by Chinese-speaking students regarding language, culture and methodology.The first presentation focuses on the difficulties encountered by Chinese students in oral interaction and the strategies they implement to communicate in French. Using an ethnographic approach, we will analyze three exolingual communication settings: Chinese-Chinese pairs, Chinese-Korean pairs and Chinese-French pairs. Using multimodal transcripts, we try to identify the different characteristics of these exolingual interactions between Chinese students and various interlocutors.The second presentation addresses the issue of the inadequacy of Chinese students in the academic context. By observing the Master's seminar in Educational Sciences and by using the self- confrontation interview method with students, the study presents an analysis of the interactional difficulties caused by the confrontation.The difficulties met by Chinese-speaking students are not only related to their language and culture, but also to methodology. This presentation focuses on the results of a survey conducted during the academic years 2013-2015 to find out how Taiwanese students assessed their academic experience in France. Our research exposes the difficulties faced by students regarding the organization of education and the understanding of the French university system.
