Abstract : Appliances represent a quickly growing domain that induces an increased demand for safety and rapid operating system design and development. In this paper, existing operating system approaches are assessed with respect to the requirements raised by appliances. Their limitations are analyzed and used as a basis to propose a new approach to designing and structuring OSes for appliances. This approach is based on \em Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs), and offers rapid development of robust OSes. Our proposal is assessed and illustrated by concrete examples.
