This paper presents the main concepts of the Quality of Service. It gives some definitions of the quality of service essentially from two points of view, from the user point of view and from the service provider point of view, i.e. the lowest layers, considering the communication stack. It summarises the notions of characteristics, of parameters, of management. It gives some approach for research and development.
