From the moment the first elementary schools of its network were created in 1862, the philanthropic society of the Alliance française universelle, whose headquarter was in Paris, wanted to modernize through westernisation the minds of the Eastern Jewish community's youths who were considered ignorant and backward. To achieve their aim, in every new schools, Western languages (French in most cases) became the languages of schooling to promote "the moral regeneration" as it was stated by the Alliance. This paper analyses how Jewish teachers of Bulgarian, Moroccan, Ottoman origins, among others, trained in Paris, for whom Judaeo-Spanish was most of the time a first language and the language of their community, justify (in correspondence with central administration, and in various publications), the eradication of the children's language - Judaeo-Spanish. Judaeo-Spanish did not seem, in their eyes, to have a territory and was perceived on the territory of other languages as an inconvenience which made it counter-productive.
